What's a "power" conference, anyway?
Any sampling of college teams that includes South Florida and Baylor and leaves out Memphis and Gonzaga is, goodness knows, far from ideal. Nevertheless, for our purposes here the 73 teams under the major-conference rubric come from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-10, and SEC.
Strictly speaking, of course, numbers across conferences aren't directly comparable. Rather, the best we can say is that Notre Dame's offense was as good in Big East terms in 2006 as Texas's offense was in Big XII terms. Even so, these conference numbers over the past two years have proven to be pretty handy indicators come tournament time. ¶ 5:58 AM
